Protecting the Similan Islands’ Fragile Marine Ecosystem
In a significant move to safeguard Thailand’s delicate coral reefs, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has announced new regulations targeting underwater photography during scuba diving activities. These measures, published in the Royal Gazette, aim to minimise human-induced damage to marine ecosystems, particularly in popular diving destinations like the Similan Islands.
Key Regulations for Divers
Certification Requirements for Underwater Photography
Under the new rules, only divers who meet specific criteria are permitted to carry cameras during deep dives:
- Possession of an Advanced Open Water certification.
- Alternatively, a logbook at least 40 deep dives.
Divers must be prepared to present their certification or logbook upon request by authorities.
Guidelines for Snorkelers
To further protect coral reefs, snorkelers are required to maintain a minimum distance of two metres above the coral. This measure is designed to prevent accidental contact and damage to the reef structures.
Enforcement and Penalties
Dive operators, licensed instructors, and their assistants are empowered to immediately halt diving activities if participants fail to comply with the new regulations. Moreover, instructors and assistants who neglect to enforce these rules risk the revocation of their licenses.
Exemptions
The restrictions do not apply to diving activities conducted for:
- Academic research.
- Educational purposes.
- Marine conservation and restoration projects supervised by relevant authorities.
Implications for Similan Liveaboard Divers
The Similan Islands, renowned for their vibrant marine biodiversity and crystal-clear waters, are a prime destination for liveaboard diving enthusiasts. These new regulations are particularly pertinent for divers planning trips to this region.
Liveaboard operators are expected to implement these rules diligently, ensuring that divers are informed and compliant.Divers should verify their certification levels and logbook records before embarking on trips to avoid any disruptions.
Balancing Tourism and Conservation
Thailand’s initiative reflects a broader commitment to balancing the booming dive tourism industry with the imperative of marine conservation. By enforcing stricter controls on underwater activities, the country aims to preserve its underwater treasures for future generations while still offering unparalleled diving experiences.
