Liveaboard Overview
Explorer is a trusted and affordable Similan liveaboard with a long-standing reputation for safe and enjoyable dive cruises. Operated by Sea Dragon Dive Center, one of the original liveaboard providers in the region, the Explorer caters to divers looking for straightforward, comfortable multi-day trips to the best sites in Thailand.
Boat Features and Comfort
At 26 meters in length and 5.5 meters wide, the Explorer is a steel-hulled vessel offering a stable and safe ride between the islands. The boat is designed with functionality and comfort in mind, including a shaded dive deck, large sun deck, and communal dining area. The layout is simple but effective, with enough space to relax between dives.
One of the key advantages of the Explorer over her sister ship, the Andaman, is the increased number of en-suite cabins. These are ideal for divers who prefer a bit more privacy and comfort without the cost of a premium boat. All cabins are air-conditioned and come with reading lights and storage space. Guests can choose from twin bunk cabins (shared bathrooms) or double/twin cabins with en-suite bathrooms.
Diving Itinerary
The Explorer’s dive schedule varies throughout the season but typically includes 3-day, 4-day, and 5-day trips. Longer trips provide additional time at world-class dive sites like Richelieu Rock and Koh Bon, along with more relaxed surface intervals. Most itineraries visit the Similan Islands, Koh Tachai, and the Surin Islands, offering a broad mix of underwater terrain, marine life, and visibility conditions.
Up to four dives a day are offered, including night dives where conditions allow. Diving is conducted in small groups led by experienced guides, many of whom have years of experience diving the Andaman Sea. Rental equipment is available onboard for those who don’t bring their own.
Crew and Dive Team
The team are known for their professionalism, friendly approach, and extensive knowledge of local sites. The boat has a high staff-to-guest ratio, ensuring a smooth operation both above and below water. Safety procedures are well-established, with thorough dive briefings and emergency protocols in place.
The dive deck is organised and efficient, making entry and exit from the water easy even for less experienced divers. Nitrox is not available onboard, but the boat’s relaxed schedule and shallow average depths make air a suitable choice for most.
Who It’s For
Explorer is best suited for divers who want a reliable and cost-effective way to explore the Similan Islands without compromising on safety or dive site quality. It’s ideal for backpackers, budget travellers, and those who value experience and consistency over luxury. With flexible itineraries and an approachable, knowledgeable crew, it’s also a good choice for those new to liveaboard diving.
