SIMILAN DIVING DAY TRIPS

The Similan Islands and surrounding dive sites are the perfect place for a day trip of diving. With only an hour’s transfer time to the nearest dive site Khao Lak is the ideal location to use as a starting point. The Similans, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock are some of the best places to dive in Thailand. Here there are world class dive sites where you can encounter manta rays, whale sharks and view beautiful underwater scenes.

blue-dolphin

BLUE DOLPHIN SIMILAN DAY TRIP

The Blue Dolphin is a 47 foot speedboat with triple 225HP engine departing from Namkhem Pier. This is one of the faster options for getting to the best dive sites, so it really is for keen divers who want to spend less time transferring and more time diving. There is shaded seating for the trip over, or space on the front deck if you would like to catch some sun. The Blue Dolphin is run by an excellent team, it is an efficiently operated trip with less time travelling and more time at the dive destinations diving or relaxing.

Wet-Cat

WET CAT SIMILAN DAY TRIP

The Wet Cat is a catamaran offering a comfortable and spacious journey out to the best dive sites in the Similans. It is built out of glass fiber reinforced plastic so is light, strong and sturdy. It takes a maximum of 16 divers and departs from Nam Khem pier. This boat has a sun roof with sun shade for relaxing on between dives, and a dive platform from which to enter the Andaman Sea. The Wet Cat is a fairly new addition to the Similan day trip diving scene. It was launched in 2012 and continues to provide an excellent day trip service.

mv-camic44

MV CAMIC SIMILAN DAY TRIP

The MV Camic is a 26 metre long liveaboard stationed out in the Similans all throughout the season. It is joined daily by the Nawanoppa speed boat taking both divers and snorkellers to the larger liveaboard where they can enjoy their day trip activities. There is plenty of space for relaxing on inbetween dives, however, as it caters to both liveaboard divers and day trippers it can get busy. The MV Camic is a good option as it caters to both snorkellers and divers individually, and it is an excellent platform for taking courses.

"Thailand Dive & Sail can help choose the right Similan day trip for you"

similan-diving-to-expect

A TYPICAL SIMILAN DAY TRIP

Each boat travelling out to the Similans follows different daily itineraries, however, here is a rough outline of what you can expect from a typical Similan diving day trip.

Similan day trips start from the moment you are collected from your Khao Lak hotel and taken to the pier. The boats either depart from Nam Khem pier or Tab Lamu, both no more than 30 minutes from Khao Lak. Cruise times vary depending on which boat you are on and where you are going, but you can expect to reach your dive site between 1 hour and 1 hour and 30 minutes (when weather conditions are fine). Once at your dive destination you will have your first dive (or breakfast if you are joining the Camic), followed by lunch on board with the divers and then a second dive in the afternoon. After the second dive you will be transferred back to land and then to your hotel. You should expect to arrive at your hotel between 17.00 and 18.00.

similan-snorkeling-with-turtle

SNORKELLING FROM A SIMILAN DIVING DAY TRIP

If you would like to join a Similan diving day trip and have a friend or family member who would like to join as a snorkeller this is possible depending on the boat and location.

The best places to snorkel are the Similans, Koh Bon and Koh Tachai, although each for different reasons. The Similans and Koh Tachai are good places for beginner snorkelers and for those wanting a beach visit (although not all boats incorporate a beach visit). Koh Bon is a great location for more advanced snorkellers who would like to see some interesting fish life in deeper waters – and possibly a manta! The Blue Dolphin will take accompanying snorkellers to Koh Bon and the Similans, and the Wet Cat and Camic will take snorkellers anywhere except Richelieu Rock. It is important to notw that all boats are first and foremost diving day trip boats. The Camic is the best option for snorkelling from as the Nawanoppa speedboat is at hand to take snorkellers out to the snorkel sites.

overnight-similan-liveaboard

OVERNIGHT SIMILAN DIVING TRIPS

If you are thinking about taking a few day trips then an overnight trip is the best Similan dive trip option for a few reasons. Firstly, and most importantly, you get more time in the Similan islands and more dives. Instead of having the long transfers out and back you can spend time relaxing on the boat or getting an extra couple of dives into the day. Overnight trips can work out more cost effective too. Depending on which cabin you choose, an overnight trip can actually be cheaper than 2 day trips. If you are taking a course then an overnight trip is ideal as you have more time in between dives for studying and talking with your instructor. There is also more space for studying on a Similan liveaboard boat.

Similan liveaboard overnight trips are nearly always the best option for anyone looking for a diving trip. A liveaboard for anywhere between 2 days, 1 night and 5 days, 5 nights will allow you more time at the dive sites and more time in the beautiful dive destinations. You will be around like minded people and amongst experienced diving instructors who you can learn from.

Whether you are interested in taking a course on the MV Camic or are looking for a more extended liveaboard, such as the MV Oktavia, we have many Similan liveaboard options and can help to find the right one for you.

DIVE RICHELIEU ROCK WITH US

Richelieu Rock is the best dive site in the Similans, and arguably the best dive site in Thailand. For this reason Thailand Dive and Sail will be offering tailor made Richelieu Rock day trips to this dive site on Mondays throughout the Similan diving season.

This dive site is packed with marine life; schools of fish swarm around the rock and fascinating creatures and critters are lurking behind every crevice and inbetween the corals. This is an excellent dive site for advanced divers or for those wanting to take the Adventure Deep Dive or Advanced course.

Manta-ID-research

MANTA RESEARCH & EDUCATION

In recent years Koh Bon has been a hot spot for magnificent Manta Rays as this dive site is a well known cleaning station for these fascinating creatures. If you have always dreamed of diving with Manta Rays then this is the trip for you. Of course we cannot guarantee that you will see them, but we will take you to the best place in Thailand to see Manta Rays.

We will also present some interesting facts about these intriguing animals and will introduce you to an important research tool that we use to help protect and track mantas.

"The highlight of our trip was the Manta Ray presentation by Ric Parker. He has learnt from some of the world's leading scientists and it is clear he really knows his stuff. The presentation was interesting and informative, even to seasoned instructors." - Chris Buckley

TYPICAL ITINERARY FOR A SIMILAN DIVING DAY TRIP

The day starts when you are collected from your hotel and taken to the pier in Tab Lamu or Nam Kean. Transfers from Khao Lak are always included in the day trip price and Phuket transfers can usually be arranged on request for an additional price.

Once on the speedboat or catamaran you will be given a safety briefing and then taken over to the Similan or Surin National Marine Park. This will take from an hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half, depending on weather conditions and where you are travelling to. Once you reach your destination you will kit up and set off for your first dive at around 10.00. Each dive will be between 45 minutes and one hour, depending on your group’s abilities.

After the morning dive a hearty and delicious Thai lunch will be served. This will usually be in a buffet style and will have a mixture of seafood, chicken, pork and vegetable dishes, stir fried or in curries. Fresh fruit will be served after your lunch and there will be a bit of time for relaxation before the second dive.

The second dive will be between 13.30 and 14.00. Snorkelers are often welcome to join these Similan diving day trips, dependant on the location (snorkelers cannot visit Richelieu Rock on diving day trips). They will be taken to suitable snorkel sites while the divers explore further under the water.

At around 15.00 the boat will depart from the Similan or Surin National Park and head back to the pier. Transport will be waiting here to take you back to your hotel. On a typical Similan diving day trip you should arrive back at your hotel at 17.00-18.00.

SIMILAN DIVING DAY TRIPS

AN ALTERNATIVE TO A SIMILAN LIVEABOARD

If you have the time, we strongly suggest choosing a Similan liveaboard for diving from Khao Lak. Similan liveaboards allow you the time to explore all the best dive sites that the Similans have to offer and offer more opportunities to dive per day, meaning that your log book bulks up quicker. One of the main benefits of a Similan liveaboard is that you wake up at the destination before all day trippers appear. If you are short of time, however, a Similan diving day trip is a perfect alternative.
