Khao Lak is a great area to spend your holidays with a variety of activities including scuba diving, elephant trekking and bathing, jungle and cave exploration, waterfalls, temples, markets and a lot more. Topping all that, you can get some amazing food from many cuisines and great hotels for all budgets. We would like to point out some of our favorite activities or if you just want to relax, there are plenty of white sand breathtaking beaches.

Scuba diving

Khao Lak is the base destination for the best scuba diving in Thailand. We normally recommend doing a liveaboard for at least 4 days but there are other options too. If you want to be land based, you can still explore the best dive sites Thailand has to offer by doing a day trip. You get picked up at your Khao Lak hotel in the morning, do 2 dives and be back for your sunset cocktail or a deep in the pool by 4pm. Those trips offer great dive sites such as Richelieu rock, Koh Tachai, Koh Bon and the best sites in the Similan Islands.

Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park is by far one of our favorite land tours. There is so much to do around that area we would normally recommend spending 2 to 3 days and it can all be arranged from Khao Lak.

You will need around 1 to 1 ½ hour drive from Khao Lak where you can do elephant trekking, raft, jungle and cave expeditions and much more. Many of these trips can be done in day tours but spending the night at Khao Sok on a floating bungalow at Cheow Lan Lake is a must. While staying at the lake, you can enjoy some kayaking while observing an array of wild life and breathtaking limestone formation.

Another great tour where you get to experience firsthand this massive and yet friendly elephants. It is also a day trip where it can be done in a half or full day. You will be able to feed the elephants and even bath them. There is also the option of doing a trekking while riding these gentle animals. Although there is a lot of controversy about elephant camps, we choose only the camps that focus on the elephant’s conservation and wellbeing.

Around Khao Lak

Khao Lak itself has a lot to offer where you can even make your own way around, without having to book a trip after doing just a bit of research. There are some great waterfalls nearby as well as beautiful trekking. A guided trip can also be organized.

If you like to experience the local culture, venture yourself with a visit to the local Bang Niang fresh food market. This is an abundance of local fresh vegetables and a lot of fresh sea food. You can find pretty much any local food you can imagine, not only limited to veggies and meat but also fresh noodles, spices and much more.
